STOP IT NOW by R. N. Sandberg

Grades K-3
Audience limitations: typically 60 children, their teachers and school counselor(s)
An audience participation play where children begin by learning their Safety Rules:
  • Say No Like You Mean It
  • Get Away to A Safe Place
  • Tell Someone Until You Get the Help You Need
An emergency drill reinforces the rules by getting the children on their feet and repeating the rules with rhythmic chanting, rhymes, and hand clapping. Clear and specific actions illustrate the differences between "Safe" and "Unsafe" Touch, and that touching can change from one type to another.

The children then follow the story of Tim and his sister Nancy, helping Tim deal with a "confusing" situation. The focus then shifts to Nancy. The audience is encouraged to help Nancy escape a threatening situation by teaching her the Safety Rules they have just learned. At the end, everyone feels good about having successfully helped Nancy get the help she needed. The program concludes with an actor-led workshop. In small groups the children review the safety rules in a participatory review that allows them to articulate and physicalize their Safety Rules.

In-service training for teachers and a Handbook are available for this program.

TALK ABOUT STUFF by R. N. Sandberg

Grades 4-6
Audience limitations: typically 90 children, their teachers and school counselor(s)
"Why did she get mad when I flipped up her skirt?" "What is so bad about 'pantsing' someone?"

Talk About Stuff emphasizes the need to talk about what bothers us, and to understand our peers. The Safety Rules are illustrated in performance, demonstrating their usefulness in stopping an offensive act, getting away from someone who won't stop and telling an adult who can help. Characters talk to the audience about their feelings, drawing the kids into what made these things happen and what should be done to solve the problem.

Tim, while playing, gets overexcited and flips up the skirt of a friend. He in turn gets his pants taken down by a school bully. He discloses to his sister, Nancy, who is dealing with an abusive situation of her own. She has learned some safety rules to deal with the situation. Although it is difficult at times, she eventually gets the help she needs. The play is designed for this age group, and illustrates to the children how they can gain control over threatening and/or abusive situations.

The program concludes with a brief workshop in which the audience, participating through discussion and theatrical improv, articulates specifics of how they can apply the safety rules in their own lives.

In-service training for teachers and a Handbook are available for this program.
