| Frequently Asked Questions Why do children need the kind of education Open Door Theatre offers? Unfortunately one out of every four girls and one out
of every five boys will be sexually abused by age 18. Eighty
to ninety percent of offenders are family members or someone
close to the family. When sexual abuse occurs within a family,
it is likely to continue for a period of time, even years,
until it is discovered and stopped. Sexual abuse is detrimental
to all victims, their families, and to all of the community.
Children who are well informed and able to act and who have
someone who will listen often can avoid or stop sexual abuse.
Offenders try to choose victims whom they think won’t resist
or tell. If I speak to my child about these issues, then why does it need to be presented in schools? Fortunately, there are many parents who speak to their children about
these issues. Obviously some parents do not. The school can be a neutral
place for many children who need to become aware of these issues. An ODT
performance can normalize discussion about these issues of personal safety.
We hope that when a child observes unsafe behavior, they will feel
safe in talking to an appropriate adult.
